Birthstones by Zodiac Sign | Zodiac Birthstones
Most people know the modern birthstone for their birth month, but did you know that there are many different lists of birthstones that were used thousands of years before the National Association of Jewelers standardized them in 1912? The attraction to birthstones used to be much more involved than the simple and superficial wearing of your month’s jewel and each list of birthstones depicts these different sets of beliefs.
One of my favorite birthstone collections involves the zodiac. Instead of wearing the stone of your month, these birthstones are associated with each astrological sign.
It seems simple enough, to replace your birth month with the dates corresponding to your zodiac sign and start wearing a different stone, but these particular birthstones are mystical in origin.
What’s most interesting is the proposed metaphysical relationship the sun, moon, and the stars have with each of these gemstones. Under this theory, the stones are influenced in a very significant way by the corresponding astrological forces. Not only are these stones worn as a symbol of their sign, it has been thought that wearing the gemstone linked to your zodiac sign also enhances the power and traits associated with your sign. Since the stone is directly influenced by the planets, the stone acts as an intermediary that transmits energy between you and your zodiac.
Over the course of history, many people wanted to hone in on the positive vibes from their sign, so amulets were created using zodiacal birthstones.
A warrior may have had a crest carved in his birthstone with a symbol representing his zodiac. These amulets were carved with designs true to the nature of the sign, during times when the planet’s alignment was most appropriate.
Unfortunately, I am unable to give you your one true zodiacal birthstone because many different gemstones interact with the planets and have an impact on your zodiac.
Because of this, varying lists have been created depicting multiple stones per zodiac sign. Since there are many different stones to choose from and wearing the stones together can create a different effect, I would recommend consulting an astrologist if you want an exact recommendation for your personal birthstone choice. For the sake of wearing an astrologically significant stone, I have shared an old chart from The Curious Lore of Precious Stones by George Frederick Kunz that was published in 1913.

Planetary influence is only the beginning when it comes to analyzing a deeper connection with birthstones throughout history. Whether it be a planet, religious belief, calendar, in memoriam, or healing power, gemstones have been linked with a magnitude of complex traditions and rituals.
