How To Keep Your Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings Looking Like New

If you are like me, you have a fairly large collection of earrings. I have several hundred pair, I’m sure. I have diamond earrings, gold earrings, copper and gold hoop earrings, and various gemstone earrings. Of course, most of them I seldom, if ever, wear. There is one pair in my collection seems to keep getting worn again and again, however: my sterling silver hoop earrings. I love my hoop earrings, and the rest of my sterling silver jewelry, but I don’t always take care of it the way I should.I did some research on sterling silver and how to take care of it and now I’d love to share what I found out with you here.

Sterling silver has been around a long time. Most historians agree that sterling silver originated in Europe somewhere around the 12th century. Sterling silver is not pure silver. It is alloyed, or mixed, with other metals because pure silver is not strong enough to be made into anything by itself. Copper is the most common metal that is alloyed with silver to produce sterling silver. To be considered sterling silver, the mixture has to be 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. Sterling silver should be marked 925 (from the 92.5% pure silver in it). If sterling silver was pure silver, there would not be much of a problem with it tarnishing. It is the other metals in sterling silver that react with air to form the brownish-color tarnish that appears after prolonged exposure to the air. Some new alloys like Argentium sterling silver do help inhibit tarnish formation, but still don’t keep it from ever forming.

So how do you keep your sterling silver hoop earrings from tarnish-free and looking their best? Regular jewelry cleaners will take off the skin oils and dirt that accumulates on all jewelry, but not the tarnish. Jewelry polishing cloths (available in most discount stores) will do a good job on your earrings, though. Just rub them gently with the cloth until the tarnish is gone. If you can’t get all the tarnish in the “nooks and crannies” with a cloth, follow this procedure to get them clean: Crumple aluminum foil and spread it out with the shiny side up on the bottom of a heat-proof glass dish. Place your sterling silver hoop earrings on the foil and sprinkle them with about 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Pour boiling water over the earrings until they are covered. You will smell sulfur as the tarnish is removed from the earrings onto the foil. I use a pair of rubber-tipped serving tongs to remove the jewelry, because the water will still be hot. Be careful! Rinse them with clear water and dry them with a soft cloth. I have done this with plain sterling silver jewelry, sterling silver cubic zirconia rings, and also with diamond stud earrings. Be very careful if you decide to remove tarnish from any sterling silver with other gemstones or pearls attached in this manner, as those things may be damaged during this process. Also, I have not tested this foil/baking soda/boiling water process with gold earrings or any other gold, so proceed with caution if you want to try it with tarnished gold.

After you have cleaned and restored your sterling silver hoop earrings to their “like new” state, you have to store them properly to minimize any new tarnish from appearing. I have found that small plastic zipper snack baggies are great for storing individual pieces of silver. Place your sterling silver inside, press out as much air as you can, and zip completely. You can easily see what is in them in your jewelry box. Then, when you head for those beloved hoop earrings to wear them next week or even next month, you can be sure they will look as beautiful as the day you bought them.
