I recently found a website with a short Q&A that makes it so, so simple to figure out your personal wedding ring style—AND it also gives you around two dozen ring suggestions that fit that style. I took the test and, lo and behold, the 24 recommended rings, after deciphering that my jewelry style is “Bohemian Elegance (Whimsical)”, were exactly my style! (For everyone who clicks through the 10-minute test, it provides roughly 20 ring recommendations, give or take.)
How’s it work? You click through 15 questions of the feature called “Discover Your Wedding Style,” Launched earlier this year, it appears at the bottom of the website home page of jewelry designer, Sofia Kaman. I’m a big fan of Sofia’s work—I’ve known her for almost as long as she’s had her jewelry company, Sofia Kaman Fine Jewels, initially begun as Kamofie Designs back in 2000, in Venice, California, where she operates her Abbot Kinney Boulevard boutique. All of Sofia’s signature jewelry is inspired by the forms, textures, magic, and mystery of nature, blending the beauty of vintage style with a distinctive modern sensibility.
Earlier this year, when Sofia re-branded her company under her own name, that’s when this quiz feature was launched on her website. Sofia Kaman is such a notable contemporary designer in women’s wedding rings—she’s named as one of our exclusive lists, “Bridal Ring Lines Designed by Women”–so I’ll let her tell you about it. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation, with Sofia’s answers to our questions on this cool ring style quiz:
Who should take it—the bride, the groom, or both?
Either. When answering the questions, the idea is to imagine whoever will be wearing the jewelry. The quiz even works for someone who is already married or not looking for a specific wedding jewels. It’s really designed to help a woman pinpoint her personal style, which we believe should most definitely be evident in her wedding style! We’ve had brides use it in the store if they’re feeling overwhelmed about looking for rings. We’ve also had gals answering for their best friends in order to help grooms figure out what their fiancée would like for an engagement ring. It’s fun when a bride comes in who’s already have taken the quiz online and announces her style, and then we take her directly to the pieces she loves!
How many different Wedding Styles are there, and what are they?
We have differentiated 6 styles: Bohemian Elegance (Whimsical); City Sophisticate (Modern); Natural Beauty (Understated); Rocking Tradition (Edgy); Timeless Glamour (Classic); and Vintage Romantic (Romantic).
After I took the test, I saw that every bride-to-be has a Secondary Wedding Style, too? Because I saw that my Secondary is “City Sophisticate (Modern).” Explain that a bit more.
The quiz is designed to project your signature style based on the “score” your answers dictate. While it’s designed so that there can’t be a tie, someone may have a good portion of answers in a secondary category. So we felt it was important to include, because so often when we’re working with brides, the combination of elements making up her style is unique and can’t always be defined and confined by one exact category. We are all so multi-faceted! It is interesting to see how two (sometimes opposite) styles can be seen in the same person. It gives us great design ideas, especially when we’re creating a custom piece. We are directed to the elements and details a woman likes based on her varied style preferences.
I really like some of the style questions that are asked in the test. Are there one or two questions that you, especially, feel get to the heart of who a woman is?
Well, that’s hard to say. But I do think question 13 regarding your wedding dress choice says a lot about your personal style–and, of course, question 9, regarding shoes!
How long does it take to click through the questions?
That depends. It’s designed to be pretty fast, a few minutes, but I’ve seen some people really take their time and observe the answer imagery as well. Sometimes I tell people just go for the gut reaction that they feel from the image choices. That’s my tip for a speedy quiz.
For each ring you suggest, I see you provide a photo of it, the retail cost, and a short description. Can you elaborate on what those descriptions entail?
Yes. On our website, you can shop Wedding and Engagement jewelry based on categories (Engagement Rings, One-of-a-Kind, etc.) or based on style (Bohemian Elegance, City Sophisticate, etc.) Once the quiz determines your Wedding Style, it takes you directly to that style section, where you can read details on individual items, such as the piece’s materials, available metal, and size options, or unique history, as in the case of curated vintage pieces.
I see that we can add different rings you suggest to an online “Wish List”—but what do we do if we have questions—about a particular ring? Or anything else?
When you look at ANY item on our site, there’s a button called “Contact a Stylist” below the product description. It opens up a form on the screen, where you can send us a message about any questions you may have about the piece. You can request additional views, a video, etc., and a jewelry stylist at our boutique will reply within 24 hours.
How long does it take for the ring and band to arrive?
Any items that are in stock, such as one-of-a-kind or vintage pieces, are shipped the next business day via Fed Ex 2-Day. If you’re ordering pieces in a specific metal and size combination that isn’t stock, we’ll make your piece and have it ready to ship in 2-3 weeks.
