With the Christmas season nearly upon us, most people are thinking about the gifts they want to give to their loved ones. One gift that is very popular at this time of the year, especially for the ladies on your list, is jewelry. All of the women I know (myself included) love opening those little boxes from a jewelry store to find out what treasure is lying within. Will it be one of the pieces of heart jewelry that you have been dropping hints about or will it be something equally beautiful that your loved one has lovingly picked out themselves? For some women, it may be a beautiful ruby heart ring or a diamond engagement ring as this is the season when we think of love and families, so this makes it a very popular time of year for proposals of marriage.
In fact, my husband and I got engaged at Christmas and although I had chosen the ring I wanted I had not seen it for some months, so it was lovely to open the box and have him slip it onto my finger. Nine years later I still love my ring (and the man who gave it to me) and wear it every day. Until I started this website I had no particular need to look at engagement rings so other than noticing other people’s rings I hadn’t really considered how styles and fashions have changed over the years. So I decided to see what style of engagement ring I would choose if I was getting engaged in 2015.
One of the biggest changes I have noticed is that large selections of rings are now in white gold rather than the traditional gold that was the norm when we got engaged. White gold and platinum rings were far more expensive and less widely available, certainly for our budget.
Still, by far the most popular style of engagement ring is the traditional solitaire diamond whether set in gold or white gold, on a plain band or with fancy shoulders or with side accents. The choice seems endless especially when you look at the online retailers, not only do they seem to have far more choice than the mall jewelers, but the prices are competitive and you are sure to be able to find a ring to fit even the tightest budget.
A diamond solitaire was never my first choice of ring for two reasons; firstly I’m not very fond of solitaire rings and secondly they don’t really look good on my fingers because of the length between my second finger joint and my knuckles. That is one of the reasons I chose the ring I did, an 18K gold band with a single diamond surrounded by eight blue sapphires: it looked far nicer than the solitaires I tried on. So I looked to see if I could find anything similar today. Although searching online I found some really beautiful diamond and sapphire rings I didn’t find any I liked more than the one I already have.
But it is not only engagement ring styles that have changed, so have wedding bands. When I got married the fashion was for broader wedding rings mostly in yellow gold whether plain or engraved, and mine is a 10mm 22k plain gold band. While the width of wedding rings has changed over the years (they are a lot narrower now) plain gold bands in white gold, platinum or gold are still very popular. What has become increasingly popular over the past few years are bridal sets, an engagement ring and matching wedding band designed to be worn together to look like one ring. Although I am not a big fan of diamonds, if I was choosing an engagement ring and wedding ring today I think I would pick a bridal set, subject to seeing how it looked on my finger.
I know if Santa hangs a little jewelers box my tree this Christmas it won’t contain an engagement ring but it may well have a ruby heart ring or heart charm bracelet inside. However, if you are hoping that your boyfriend will pop the question maybe your little box will have that sparkling diamond ring inside.

Three Occasions To Give A Ruby Heart Pendant
Without a doubt, what is considered beautiful is very much a subjective matter and it probably always has been. For example, the concept is referred to as far back as the Ancient Greeks and in 1588 Shakespeare wrote:
“Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye”
And it was actually Margaret Wolfe Hungerford under the pseudonym of ‘The Duchess’ who wrote in 1878:
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”
What does all of this have to do with a ruby heart pendant? Simple, really – when you see someone wearing one, it is hard to know which the true beauty is, the bewitching smile on the face of the girl or the woman or the beautiful ruby heart pendant on a glimmering gold chain so proudly displayed. A shimmering ruby heart pendant worn proudly around the neck enhances the beauty of any lady. Her winsome smile is directed outward to the world around her and backward for the person who gave her this treasure. This heart jewelry brings good luck and health to both the person who wears it and the person who gave it for whatever occasion.
These special pieces of jewelry are so much more than precious gems and metal; they surround the person who owns one with love, energy, and self-confidence. They represent fine examples of heart necklaces and readily complement other heart jewelry pieces such as heart bracelets, heart earrings, and heart brooches. There are three perfect occasions that immediately spring to mind as the ideal time to give a ruby heart pendant necklace: these are to commemorate a special event, a gift to oneself as a symbol and a bequest. Choosing the right ruby to accentuate that special heart jewelry is easier than you might think.
In general, fine gems and jewelry have been given for centuries on momentous occasions. These could be a congratulation of a job well done, graduation, the birth of the child or grandchild, wedding, anniversary, birthday or divorce. Whatever the occasion, it will be a milestone in the life of the receiver. Forever after, that piece of exquisite jewelry, the ruby heart pendant, will be a reminder of the event, the person who thought enough to give the gift and the feelings that went with it. Each time it is used to adorn the chest of the lucky woman, the ruby heart-shaped pendant will caress the skin or blouse like the physical supporting touch of the giver.
One does not need to wait for someone else to purchase an exquisite piece of jewelry. It is simply a matter of going to a jewelry store and buying the ruby heart pendant that makes the eyes glisten. Folklore has ruby as the stone of prophecy and loved by gamblers, whether these are gamblers of life or gamblers of chance. This stone fetches wisdom, happiness, and health to the wearer and symbolizes success and integrity.
Mature women often gaze upon their treasure trove of jewelry and gems and picture their lovely young daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters wearing proudly each precious piece, including these heart necklaces. These women of wisdom can take their time in matching each gem to the temperament of the receivers. Which lovely woman deserves the flash and fire of the blood red stone set in the ruby heart pendant? There will be one that is perfect for this ornament and will receive it in a personal bequest at the right
time.
There are only a few things the purchaser needs to know about these precious gems. Many gemstones are called genuine and are treated by enhancing the stone’s color usually by heating them creating a deeper, richer hue. This is part of the normal process of polishing and finishing these stones. Natural gemstones have no human interference except for the cutting and polishing.
The ruby’s value is determined by the 4 C‘s. These are cut color, clarity, and carat. The cut is the most important as it brings life to the stone. The color is made up of three components, which are hue, tone, and purity. Clarity has to do with the clearness of the stone; almost all stones have some natural imperfections. Carat is used to determine the size; larger stones are usually more valuable. A few minutes spent reviewing these 4 C’s with a professional jeweler will complete the necessary education required to make a wise selection.
Maybe you want a simple pendant or you prefer something even more elaborate, such as a heart locket with rubies encrusted. Why not take a look at some examples the next time you are buying for yourself or for someone special and imagine how even more wonderful such an addition would make the lucky wearer?
